Subramaniam Independent Makkal Osai suspended again?
April 16, 2008
A Tamil daily Makkal Osai, has been suspended for a week by the Home Minister. No reason were given but Lim Kit Siang in his blog wrote “it was due to too much coverage of Pakatan Rakyat news”.
The suspension took immediate effect yesterday will mean - Makkal Osai will not be on the streets again until next week, awaiting the fate of its appeal to the Home Minister.
This is not the first time the Tamil daily courting controversial. Last year it was suspended for publishing smoking Jesus Christ caricature.
It was back the street on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 after one month suspension imposed by Malaysian authorities.
The daily subsequently apologized and accepted by Christian community leaders. The appeal to reduce the suspension was also rejected.
Is this the first sign of repression and crackdown on human rights and the little space opening up in the printed media after the March 8 “political tsunami”?
